Beeswax comes from the wax "comb" constructed by the bees, a byproduct of their honey making. Beeswax consists of fatty acids, such as palmitic, also found in human skin. Making of Beeswax

Beeswax is made from the wax glands on the underside of the female workers abdomen. Bees mould the secreted wax into six sided cells, hexagons, which are filled with honey and topped with more wax. Beeswax cappings are only removed from the cells when the honey is harvested.

Before use the beeswax comb is melted and strained of impurities so the beeswax can be used safely in natural skincare products. Pure, filtered beeswax wonderfully retains its warm and naturally sweet aroma of plants and honey.

Beeswax Properties

Beeswax contains compounds of wax esthers found naturally in both beeswax and human skin, making beeswax very compatible with human skin. Beeswax is waterproof with a thermoplastic quality. Containing antioxidants and antibacterial agents, beeswax is unaffected by mildew, making beeswax a natural preservative, a valuable quality in a natural skincare balm.

Beeswax Uses

Beeswax has a long history of use. We know that beeswax is one of the oldest cosmetic ingredients, dating back to Ancient Egyptian times. Cleopatra used beeswax extensively, in skin creams, lipsticks and soft nail polishes. Beeswax would be combined with fragrant essential oils as a perfumed dressing to hold elaborate hairstyles in place.

Beeswax Moisturiser Recipe

Melt 1 tablespoon of beeswax granules or grated from a block, with 4 tablespoons of sweet almond oil in a bain marie. Remove from the heat and add 2 tablespoons of pure water. Mix thoroughly, adding 9 drops of Vitamin E oil and 9 drops of your favourite essential oil. Lavender, Chamomile or Geranium are good for sensitive skin. Stir until the mix is cold. Store in a glass jar in the refrigerator. The cream makes an excellent moisturiser for dry, chapped skin.
