Pure, essential oils bring great pleasure but they are worth so much more to us than just a sensual experience. The potency of a few drops of pure, essential oil is nothing short of amazing.
Thyme, is known to have twelve times the antiseptic power of carbolic acid (soap). Equally effective in antiseptic qualities are Rosemary and Lavender. Rose is not just an exquisite flower with a gorgeous fragrance but a herb with many powerful herbal properties. Also antiseptic, Rose is a heart strengthener, skin rejuvenator and bringer of sleep.
No wonder pure, essential oils have been enjoying such a revival of use as we turn to green alternatives in a quest to empower ourselves with natural beauty and health.
What are pure, essential oils?
Pure, essential oils sometimes referred to as the essences are highly concentrated aromatic liquid substances extracted from the plant kingdom; from certain species of flowers, herbs, fruits, leaves, roots and trees.
Their concentration is seventy five to one hundred times greater than the oils in dried herbs.
Essential oils have very complex chemical structures that give each species its unique characteristic scent and therapeutic propoerties.
Essential oils contain hundreds of organic constituents including vitamins, hormones, antibiotics and antiseptics. Some also contain adaptogens or natural balancers that work to stabilise blood pressure, the autonomic nervous system and the endocrine system. For example, Geranium helps to balance hormones, and Peppermint has the effect of both relaxant and stimulant, according to the body's needs.
Where are the pure, essential oils found on the plant?
The essential oils are to be found in different parts of the plant. For example, the essential oil is in the flowers of Rose and Ylang Ylang, in the flowers and leaves of Peppermint, Lavender and Rosemary, in the leaves and stems of Geranium and Thyme, in the bark of Cinnamom, in the roots of Vetiver and Ginger, in the fruits of Lemon and Bergamot, in the resins of Benzoin and Frankincense, in the seeds of Fennel and Aniseed, and in the wood of Cedar, Sandalwood and Pine.
The oil is present in tiny glands. On the highly scented Rose these are clearly visible through a microscope. If you rub a sprig of lavender between your finger and thumb, then the smell is released when the cell walls containing the oils are broken down. Queen Elizabeth I was especially fond of meadowseet for strewing, its foliage releasing sharply aromatic wintergreen as the plant was literally trampled underfoot.
Why do plants produce pure, essential oils?
Each plant has its own use for the essential oils it produces. In the Rose, fragrant oils attract bees so that pollination can occur. The Eucalyptus oil prevents insects from eating the plant. And the Frankincense tree produces resin to heal its own wounds. It is easy to recognise the similar ways in which these oils can help us.
How do we know of the particular properties of the oils?
Hundreds of years ago, before science became such a dominant discipline in the world, herb gatherers uncovered the properties and usage of essential oils by experimentation, usage, experience and intuition.
Nowadays, biochemists in their technical laboratories, using scientific method of analysis, have been successful in isolating dozens of ingredients in essential oils that account for their amazing properties.
Taking the process one step further, chemists have tried to isolate the individual components of an essential oil, in order to replicate the active substances that have the therapeutic effect. But their efforts have not been successful. A replica of a pure, essential oil in valid chemical form remains elusive.
Rose contains an especially complex oil, having thousands of constituents so small they cannot possibly be analysed. Perhaps we are not meant to find every last secret of the plant's essential oil. For me, the synergistic paradigm; that the combined effects of the individual parts of the essential oil exceeds the sum of their individual effects, points to the mystery of life itself. Great truth, divinely revealed, is usually beyond human reason.
"If the rose puzzled its mind over the question how it grew, it would not have been the miracle that it is". (J B Yeats)
Pure, essential oils and human bodies are composed of the same material. For example, we share a simlarity in amino acids - the building blocks of the body and also in terpineols used in the human organism for production of hormones, vitamins and energy.
Because of our resemblances, each to the other, our bodies are easily able to assimilate the herb's essential oils and make best use of their properties.
Firstly, the essential oils absorb into the fluid surrounding cells beneath the skin's surface where they work to help with cleansing, nourishing and balancing the skin. Once the oils reach the bloodstream they have a positive effect on the circulation where they help to bring oxygen and nutrients to the tissues.
The pure, essential oils, carried by the blood can reach deep within the body where their healing properties can take effect. Rosemary has a reviving effect on the mind and helps improve memory and clarity of thought. Bergamot and Lemon can stimulate an increase in white blood corpuscles, enhancing the immune system.
Each essential oil, though not a whole plant, is a whole organic substance in itself.
Incorporating characteristics of the plant from which it came, the oil is a pure essence with the power to to stir the mind and heart as well as the physical body. The complexity and wholesomeness of the essential oil reflects our own physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies.
Pure, essential oils carry a high vibrational energy that will set our own self healing abilities gently into action.
"Rays from the sunrise drew forth the buds and stretched them into long stalks, lifted up sap in noiseless streams, opened petals, and sucked out scents in invisible jets and breathings". (Thomas Hardy. Tess of the D'Urbervilles.)
