Balm Definition

Balms are defined as fragrant ointments for healing, anointing or soothing pain. Balm is derived from "balsam" which originated from the Greek, adapted to represent Hebrew words, "baal sheman", meaning "lord of oils". The most famous balm is possibly the Balm of Gilead so called because the areas of Gilead was rich in the aromatic gums that became ingredients of balms exported to Egypt and Israel.

Healing Balms

Healing balms traditionally contain plant oils, incense oils and pure, essential oils that hold many varied healing properties. The best healing balms contain blends of suitable oils that combine well to maximise the therapeutic effect. These oils can be made into a cream such as Melissa Healing Balm that is full of Melissa or Lemon Balm, Calendula and Hypericum, all of which combine to heal cuts, grazes, sunburn and insect bites. Healing balms are lotions. Horse Chestnut and Rosemary Leg Balm treats heavy, aching legs with healing Arnica and Rosemary, and astringent, toning Horsechestnut and Cypress. Lip Balms
