Melissa (lemon balm) has been cultivated as a herb for over 2 millennium. Melissa has been traditionally seen as a healing herb and has been used by many societies in drinks and salves for its healing properties.

Melissa takes its name from the Geek for honey bee, and it was often used spread out on floors to freshen homes. In Ancient Greece, Dioscorides the physician used it to heal various insect and animal bites, and this was probably the first time it was used in balm preparations.
